Get Your Adelaide Garden Ready Before Spring Lands
Spring officially arrives in South Australia on Monday 1 September — and in Adelaide that's the starting gun for the busiest gardening and building stretch of the year. Lawns wake up, turf goes down, garden beds get planted out, and every second weekend project that's been on hold through winter suddenly needs materials.
Here's the thing most people miss: the work that makes spring easy happens now, in August. Get your prep done in the next few weeks and your September projects get a faster start, better results, and none of the "everyone wants a delivery this weekend" queue. Here's exactly what to tackle.
1. Wake your lawn up
Winter leaves most Adelaide lawns compacted, thatchy and hungry. Late August into early spring is the ideal window to renovate before the growing season kicks in properly. That means:
Scarify
to pull out the dead thatch that's choking new growth.
Aerate
to relieve compaction and get air, water and feed down to the roots.
Top-dress
with a quality sandy loam to level low spots and encourage a thicker sward.
Feed and (if needed) over-seed
so the lawn thickens up as the soil warms.
You don't need to own the gear — we hire out aerators/scarifiers, a soil spreader, a lawn level and a lawn roller so a weekend DIY renovation is completely doable. (Full step-by-step guide coming next week.)
2. Refresh and feed your garden beds
Soil that's been sitting through winter is tired. Before you plant out for spring, dig through a quality garden or vegetable soil and some compost to put life back in the beds. If you're building new raised beds or a veggie patch, order a premium soil blend by the tonne — or by the bulka bag if you've only got room for a metre or so and no space for a tipper.
3. Lock in your hardscaping materials
Spring is when retaining walls, paving, paths and fire pits actually get built — which means September's demand for retaining wall blocks, road base, sand, cement and steel edging is high. If a build is on your list, spec your materials and get on the delivery schedule now. Planning beats scrambling every time.
4. Mulch before the heat comes
It feels early, but the smart move is to mulch in early spring before the soil dries out. A good layer of mulch locks in moisture, keeps weeds down and protects roots when the Adelaide summer arrives — and it always arrives fast. Order enough to top up every bed while it's cool.
5. Write your list and get a quote
The single best thing you can do this month: write down every spring job and the materials each one needs, then send it to us. We'll help you get the quantities right (soil and rubble are sold by the tonne, mulch by the cubic metre, turf by the square metre) so you order once and order right.
